Two prostitutes burgled a London hotel room after their
client failed to show up, a court heard today (Friday).
The two women, both 37, tried door after door until they
broke into room 423 at the Howerd (correct) Hotel, in August,
1991, London’s Southwark Crown Court heard.
They opened the door using a piece of plastic card and
stole pds stlng 250 and 600 American dollars from a man who was
sleeping in the bed.
The prostitutes were arrested a few days later when they
returned to the pds stlng 200-a-night hotel, in Temple Place,
Temple, and were recognised.
Patricia Sansome, of Harborough Road, Leicester, and
Lisa Martin, of Broughton Road, Leicester, admitted burglary.
Prosecutor Mr Ernst Horridge said: ‘They said they had
originally gone there to meet a client as they were both
prostitutes but the client had not turned up and they
had decided to burgle a room.
‘
Mr Tim Spencer, defending Sansome, said she had a
13-year-old son, and that for the first time in her life would
earn an honest living in a respectable job.
‘She puts very forcibly that she steals only from the
rich and never from the poor and for the first time in her life
she will be doing an honest day’s work,’ said Mr Spencer.
Martin has an 18-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter.
Mr Recorder Christopher Voelcker said he had intended
to immediately jail them, but had been ‘persuaded’ not to by
their lawyers.
Sansome was sentenced to 12-months jail suspended for
two years.
Martin got six months, suspended for two years.
Both women thanked the judge for their freedom.
