Trial for Yorkshireman who tried to travel to Syria to join IS
A Yorkshireman accused of trying to travel to Syria to join Islamic State will stand trial in May.
Ghulam Hussain, 30, is accused of giving an undercover policeman cash to arrange the trip.
Hussain, from Batley, is alleged to have bought a plane ticket to travel to Pakistan later this month and return via Turkey a week later.
When his home was searched, officers allegedly found a fraudulent credit card he had obtained by supplying false details of his employment and income.
Today (Thurs) he appeared at the Old Bailey from prison via video link.
Mr Justice Holroyde said the case could be sent back to Hussain’s local court, Leeds Crown Court.
Listing the case for trial on 2 May, he said: ‘Mr Hussain I have been making arrangements for your trial date next year, there’s no application for bail so you will remain in custody for the time being.’
Hussain, of Track Road, Batley, is charged with engaging in conduct in preparation for committing an act of terrorism, and engaging in conduct with the intention of assisting another person to commit an act of terrorism.
He is also charged with obtaining a fraudulent credit card.
Hussain is due at Leeds Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on 27 March.
