Barking

A former council worker accused of hiding terrorist propaganda in a prayer room at the Royal London Hospital has appeared in court.

Father-of-six Khalid Baqa, 52, allegedly stashed the extremist material in a bookcase and a roof void in a multi-faith prayer room at the NHS hospital in Whitechapel, east London.

The former Hackney council worker is also said to have made photocopies of the material between 27 April and 14 June.

He has been charged with one count of dissemination of terrorist publications, contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Baqa appeared at the Old Bailey today via video link from HMP Wandsworth.

The defendant, who holds dual British and Pakistani nationality, spoke only to confirm his identity during the preliminary hearing.

Mr Justice Holroyde remanded Baqa, of  Priory Road, Barking, in custody ahead of his trial at the Old Bailey on 11 December.

He is yet to enter a plea to one count of dissemination of terrorist publications, contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
