Maxine Carr had to repeat her TV interview twice after saying Holly and Jessica ‘were’ great kids, the court heard.

The 26-year-old burst out laughing after she was reminded about the slip into the past tense.

Carr, who had been the two girls’ classroom assistant, was filmed by BBC Look East on August 10 last year.

The jury heard her tell interviewer Rachel Dane that Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman would have been bridesmaids at her wedding.

She added: ‘They were very close to me.

They said: ”Miss Carr you are so cool,” because I was younger than the teachers.

‘They were great kids.

‘

Carr said Holly was upset that she did not get a permanent teaching job and gave her a card saying ‘Thank you!.

‘

She later repeated: ‘They were lovely kids.

Holly was like a little angel, just like a little angel, beautiful.

‘I cannot understand what has happened really.

‘

Carr also said: ‘They were just brilliant kids just like little angels really.

She then changed to the present tense and says: ‘Holly is lovely, she is just like a little doll.

She wouldn’t hurt anybody.

‘Jessica, she loves her sport, a bit of a tomboy.

‘They are like chalk and cheese if you look at them.

Holly was.

‘

Carr then laughs and sticks her tongue out as she realised her mistake.

Rachel Dane told the jury: ‘My cameraman pointed out that Maxine Carr had been talking in the past tense and we had to ask the questions again.

‘But as you saw, she did again and we had to stop the interview and start again.

‘

Cameraman Shaun Whitmore said: ‘I actually stopped the interview and felt that it wasn’t right to be done in the past tense.

‘It was I felt the families would not want the girls to be spoken about in the past tense.

‘

Carr was interviewed by BBC Look East again four days later on August 14 after police announced that two mounds of earth found in Warren Hill were unconnected.

She said, as she stood at a bus stop: ‘It was great there is still hope about them , hope they are alive.

‘

The trial continues.
