Cop denies nicking cash and supplements

A police officer has denied stealing gym supplements he had seized from a suspected shoplifter and failing to hand in money found by a member of the public.

PC Christopher Kershaw, 41, confiscated health products and protein bars from Christine Thomas on 23 April last year at Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, east London, it is said.

The officer allegedly did not log the goods and kept them for himself.

While on duty at Westfield just over a week later on 2 May he was passed cash at Westfield that had been dropped and handed in by a member of the public, it was said.

Kershaw, who is based at Forest Gate Police Station not far from the shopping centre, allegedly did not record that any money had been handed into him.

Smartly dressed in a smart blue suit Kershaw denied one charge of theft and one of ‘corrupt/improper exercise of powers and privileges by a constable’.

Kershaw, of Shrublands Close, Chelmsford, Essex, was released on unconditional bail ahead of his trial on June 5.
