Extraditing Assange ‘would be illegal’

Lawyers for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today (weds) argued that extraditing him for ‘political offences’ would be illegal. The 48-year-old is wanted in the US for allegedly conspiring with army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to expose military secrets between January and May 2010. A US grand jury has indicted Assange on 18 charges – 17 of which fall under the Espionage Act – including conspiracy to receive, obtain and disclose classified diplomatic and military documents.
