Mining giant BHP ‘did not have operational control of disaster dam’

The former chief financial officer at BHP told the High Court the mining giant did not have control over the day-to-day operations of the Samarco dam. Widespread flooding was caused to the Mariana, Minas Gerais area when the dam failed in 2015. The tailing dam was operated by Samarco, a company jointly owned by BHP and Vale, another mining firm. More than 600,000 claimants have brought a multi billion class-action claim against BHP to the High Court in central London….
