ADD TO FIRE FILED EARLIER TODAY

Russell Green was rushed to hospital by ambulance this
afternoon and may require an operation, London’s High Court was
told.

At 3.

30 pm Mr Nicholas Francis told the court that Mr Green,
one of his most crucial witnesses, had recently undergone “major
surgery” and had been “taken ill” at about 1pm today.

(September
22).

He was taken by ambulance to St Bartholomew’s Hospital,
London, where he may have to undergo further surgery, counsel
added.

Mr Francis said he considered Mr Green an essential witness,
but his medical condition was such that he may be unable to give
evidence during the two-day-old trial, due to last about another
week.

Mr Francis sought an adjournement of the case but the court
heard that might mean that the case would be delayed until after
Christmas or may even have to begin afresh before a different
judge.

The Prudential’s counsel, Mr Roger Ter Haar QC.

, said he had
a “great deal of sympathy” with Mr Green and hoped that he would
be fit to give evidence without a prolonged adjournement being
necessary.

Mr Ter Haar told the court: “It may well be that the doctor
will say Mr Green will be all right after a couple of days’
rest”.

The court adjourned until tomorrow morning when a decision
will be made as to whether the hearing — which both counsel
agreed would last at least another week — would be able to
proceed.
