A refugee accused of murdering his wife has told

A refugee accused of murdering his wife has told how he suffered
years of agonising and cruel genital torture in his native Uganda.

Farouk Okullu, 28, smashed his 23-year-old wife Caroline’s skull in
with a rock after she allegedly grabbed his crotch and squeezed hard
during a domestic argument.

Okullu denies murder, claiming he grabbed the rock in the agony of
the moment in a desperate attempt to make her let go.

He maintains he
never meant to cause serious injury.

He told an Old Bailey jury of the elaborate torture, often
focused on his genitals endured during three jail terms as a
political prisoner in Africa.

‘The worst one was called the scales of truth.

‘They tied your testicles together and used a hot, sharp bicycle
spoke to pierce the penis.

‘They then leave it for three days until it’s inflamed.

‘After tying rope to the swollen testicles, they tie stones to it.

‘It was extra painful.

‘
He said the torture was so horrific it defeated its purpose as an
interrogation method because it was impossible to understand anything
being said while it happened to you.

After suffering the Scales of Truth, he was locked in a cell with a
dead body for three days but said he was so consumed by his own
suffering that he barely noticed the corpse.

Okullu said he suffered that type of torture and others during the
third time in custody in Uganda, which lasted 16 months.

He was eventually released to house arrest after a visit by Amnesty
International and fled to Britain, where he applied for political
asylum.

After saving every penny he could, he brought his wife Caroline and
two young children to Britain to be with him, the court heard.

But once here, the marriage began to crumble.

In a fight a few days before the killing, Okullu said his wife
called him ‘Fidel Castro’ – a demeaning taunt which meant you had been
castrated.

Then on November 8, he said he arrived home unexpectedly and caught
her with another man in her bedroom.

The other man fled.

Caroline also fled and was chased by Okullu from their home in
Wellington Road North, Hounslow, to the front garden of a home further
up the road.

After fracturing her skull with a rock he found in the garden, he
made a 999 call to summon help.

He took the police where she lay but when she showed signs of life,
he allegedly lunged at her, yelling: ‘Let me get at her.

I must kill
her.

‘
Okullu was restrained and arrested.

His wife died four days later.

In interview, he said she had suddenly grabbed him by his testicles
and squeezed.

It hurt so much that in the agony of the moment and to get her to
release his grip, he grabbed the rock and hit her with it.

The trial continues.
