SHANNON: PAIR DENY THE 2009 MURDER OF TEENAGER

Two teenagers today (Fri) denied stabbing an 18-year-old to death two years ago when they appeared at the Old Bailey.

Kai Shannon and Abubakar Alawi, both 19, allegedly murdered Wahab Zaaki in Walthamstow.

The teenager suffered multiple stab wounds during an attack in Atlee Terrace, Prospect Hill, shortly after 11.30pm on March 13 2009.

Wahab, of Old Church Road, Chingford, Essex, died from wounds to his chest the following day.

The incident is believed to be part of a fight between two groups of rival youths.

Shannon and Alawi were charged on April 13 this year.

Alawi appeared before Judge Peter Thornton QC via videolink from prison, while Shannon was produced in the dock of Court Six.

Both men pleaded not guilty to murder and a second charge of wounding with intent.

They are due to face trial on January 16 next year. The case is set to last three to four weeks.

It emerged during the hearing that Attridge Solicitors, the firm representing Alawi, had suffered during the recent rioting.

The firm’s offices in Tottenham High Road were attacked and burnt down. Prosecutors will have to
resend the case papers which were destroyed in the blaze.

Shannon, of Elmore Street, Islington, north London; and Alawi, of Essex Mansions, Leytonstone, east London; were remanded in custody.
