Ban for teacher who had sex with 13 year old dozens of times
A teacher who repeatedly had sex with a 13-year-old pupil he called a ‘nymph’ more than 20 years ago been banned from the profession.
Michael McCarthy had sexual activity with the girl as many as 20 times while she was his student in 1990.
He compared the girl to Scarlet O’Hara from ‘Gone with the Wind’ after giving her Martini at his home before they had sex.
The pupil has since claimed adult claiming she ‘couldn’t ask for a nicer teacher’ but McCarthy has now been banned from teaching by a National College for Teaching and Leadership panel.
The incidents occurred around 1990 when McCarthy taught at the girl’s school – which the panel have kept a secret.
He told pupils sexual stories about his past sexual experiences and made comments about other male teachers and rudeness having their ‘hands in their pockets’.
The teacher asked the girl: ‘You don’t know what sex is yet darling, do you?’ after calling her a ‘nymph’.
McCarthy took the pupil to his home and plied her with alcohol before kissing her and going on to have sex with her.
He gave the girl a lemonade with Martini and told her ‘you’re a big girl so when I come back I expect some of that to be gone’ before comparing her to Scarlet O’Hara.
After this he preceded to have sex with her at least three times and engaged in sexual contact with her as many as 20 times.
Even at school McCarthy began to abuse his position, kissing her while on the school site.
McCarthy was cleared by the panel of a string of similar allegations regarding another pupil as well as of making derogatory comments about his victim.
Panel chair Kathy Thomson said: ‘There is no evidence that Mr McCarthy’s actions were not deliberate.
‘In light of the panel’s findings against Mr McCarthy which involved, amongst other matters, sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl and a dishonest failure to disclose his employment history, there is a strong public interest consideration.
‘The panel has decided that the public interest considerations outweigh the interests of Mr McCarthy.
‘Mr McCarthy has denied the central allegations found against him and as such has shown no insight into his actions not any remorse.’
Jayne Millions, on behalf of the Secretary of State, confirmed the panel’s decision.
Ms Millions said: ‘I agree with the panel that Mr McCarthy’s conduct was outside that which could reasonably be tolerated.
‘Taking account of the seriousness of the sexual misconduct, serious dishonesty and he fact that Mr McCarthy has shown no insight into his actions nor remorse, the panel has recommended that a review period would not be appropriate.
‘I agree with the panel’s view.’
McCarthy, who was present throughout the hearing, has been indefinitely banned from teaching.
