Obsessed chemist blew himself up in home laboratory

An obsessed amateur chemist blew himself up with the explosives he made in his home laboratory, a court heard. Matthew Haydon, 48, wrote to Jim’ll Fix It as a child asking if he could throw a hand grenade. He set up the lab in at the home in Loring Road, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, he shared with his mother. Haydon created hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) which detonated in the house, smashing windows and leaving him with permanent injuries, the Old Bailey heard….
