A crazed killer hacked his girlfriend to death wit

A crazed killer hacked his girlfriend to death with a machete
when she refused to go along with his paranoid delusions, the
Old Bailey heard today Monday.

Wycliffe Brown, 47, inflicted severe wounds on Susan Widley
when she tried to talk sense to him about his belief that their
neighbours were out to get him.

The savage attack left Miss Widley, 45, with deep gashes and
broken bones but did not severe any arteries, leaving her to
bleed to death slowly and in agony from her veins.

An overdose of anti-depressants found in her blood is thought
to be from an attempt by her to bring her suffering to an end.

Brown handed himself into a nearby police station and told
the startled desk officer: ‘I think I’ve committed a murder.

‘
Police went to the flat in Endymion Road, Harringay, N4,
and found the bloodstained body inside.

Brown later told detectives he had strangled her to put her
out of her misery but medical analysis showed she died from
blood loss and not asphyxia.

He added: ‘It’s terrible.

I strangled her and cut her with a
machete.

‘My girl turned against me.

We argued and I did it.

‘After doing that I came to myself and realised what had
happened.

‘She was crying.

I started accusing her and saying it was her
fault.

‘I’m very very sorry.

I’m so sorry that she didn’t see or
listen to me.

It should never have happened.

‘
Outside court, an officer said the trigger for the savage
killing was Brown’s obsession that his neighbours were mounting
a campaign against him and were behind the recent burglary of
his flat.

At the Old Bailey, Brown denied murdering Miss Widley on
June 10 this year but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of
diminished responsibility.

Mr Justice Mantell was told Brown had previous convictions
for violence against women, including two assaults on his former
wife.

Dr Henry Kennedy, a consultant psychiatrist, recommended that
Brown be detained in Rampton maximum security mental hospital
without limit of time.

But the court was told Rampton refused to offer a bed because
they believe he could be dealt with in a medium secure unit.

The judge adjourned sentence until November 30 so that
Rampton can be contacted again about taking Brown.
