A young woman told an Old Bailey jury how she watched in
horror as her neighbour was knifed to death after an alleged row
over a smoking barbecue.
Kim Stewart, 21, witnessed the fatal struggle from her
flat opposite the home of alleged killer Terrence Norman, 53.
The court heard Mr Andrew Kyriacou, 34, had angrily
dashed up to Norman’s flat after he flung buckets of water over
his offending grill from the balcony above.
‘There was a lot of shouting going on,’ said Miss
Stewart, who had a clear view through the flat window.
‘I saw the guy from upstairs (Norman) with his hands
round the neck of the guy downstairs.
‘
‘The next thing I saw was the guy from upstairs strike
the guy from downstairs.
‘I saw him go backwards.
He had something in his chest.
The sun reflected on it and it looked like a blade.
‘When it went into him he fell back so I thought he
had been stabbed.
‘
Miss Stewart said for a moment she could not believe
her eyes and ran to see her boyfriend who was watching from
another window in the flat.
‘I saw the guy from downstairs struggle up.
I got the
impression he was all right.
‘But then it started again, there was more screaming
and abuse.
‘
The court heard that the knife had been plunged into Mr
Kyriacou’s chest up to the hilt.
He managed to stagger out of Norman’s flat but died in
hospital later that afternoon from a massive haemmorhage, the jury
was told.
When police arrived at the block in Avondale Square,
Southwark, to arrest Norman he allegedly said: ‘All right, but it
was self-defence.
‘
Lorry driver Norman denies murder on June 7 last year.
The trial continues.
