A policeman shot dead by two Irish gunmen was found lying
in the roadway helplessly clutching his truncheon, an Old Bailey
jury heard today (Wed).
Special Constable Glenn Goodman, 37, was not carrying any
firearms when he was blasted in the chest during a routine check
on two motorists, the court was told.
SPc Goodman was still alive when he was found by a Royal Mail
driver lying near the central reservation on the A64 Leeds-York
Road in the early hours of June 7 last year.
Charles Headley, 44, said when he first saw the body in the
road he thought it was debris from a burst tyre.
In a statement read to the jury he said: ‘I saw something
lying in the outside lane of my carriageway.
At first I thought
it may be a shredded tyre.
‘
He added: ‘I again looked at the object I had seen and realised
it was the body of a person.
‘
Mr Headley said he stopped his van and jogged back along the
road to see if he could help.
He said: ‘I found the policeman lying in the road.
He had his
truncheon in his right hand with the strap wrapped round his wrist.
He was lying directly beside a stationary police car.
I bent down
and asked him if he was all right.
He moved his head.
‘
A woman police officer was soon on the scene and an ambulance
was called for, the court heard.
Mr Headley said he looked into the police car and saw a second
police officer, PC Alexander Kelly, 33, who had also been shot and
seriously wounded.
He said: ‘He was lying across the front seats.
He was bleeding
from his lower body and was moaning.
‘
Mr Headley flagged down a passing lorry and took a coat from
the driver which he used to keep SPc Goodman warm, the court heard.
SPC Goodman died later in hospital from two gunshot wounds to
his chest.
PC Kelly had been hit by four bullets but survived, the
court heard.
Paul Magee, 42, and Michael O’Brien, 32, both deny murdering
SPc Goodman and attempting to murder PC Kelly.
They also deny
attempting to murder two other police officers in a second shooting
incident later that morning.
The trial continues.
