WARSAME: TEENAGE CASHBOX ROBBERS FOILED BY PUBLIC

Two teenage robbers who were foiled by brave members of the public when they tried to grab a cash box have been jailed for seven years.

Mohammed Warsame and Stevey Mackay, 19, attacked a security guard as he collected takings from a shop at night in December last year.

Warsame jumped off a motorbike and attempted to pull the cash box from the guard’s hand.

The guard refused to let go and was dragged to the floor on top of the box.

Members of the public, including an off-duty officer, managed to restrain Warsame at the scene in Thames Street, Kingston, Surrey.

Mackay was spotted after crashing the stolen motorbike in Hampton Court Road.

Mackay, of Thames Ditton, was sentenced to four years imprisonment after being convicted of attempted robbery and six months for theft of a motor vehicle at Kingston Crown Court.

Warsame, of Kingston, pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to three years for attempted robbery and six months for theft of a motor vehicle.

Detective Constable Marlon Pinto of Barnes Flying Squad said: “I would like to thank the C-I-T guard, the public and an off-duty police officer who together detained Warsame at the scene, the quick actions of police also resulted in Mackay being arrested nearby.

“This case sends a clear message to criminals thinking of committing this type of crime that the community and police will work together to make sure they do not get away with it.”
