A police doctor accused of manslaughter after a prisoner died in the cells of the station where he was on duty will stand trial next year.
Dr Hisham El-Baroudy, 56, is said to have examined Andrej Rymarzak hours before he died in police custody from drug and alcohol intoxication on 22 January 2009.
Prosecutors allege he was grossly negligent when he declared the deceased fit to be detained at Chelsea police station in west London.
Dr El-Baroudy appeared in the dock at Southwark Crown Court today (FRI) for a plea and case management hearing.
He spoke only to confirm his name and enter a not guilty plea during the brief hearing.
Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith remanded Dr El-Baroudy on unconditional bail ahead of his trial on January 9, 2012.
Police arrested Mr Rymarzak near Old Brompton Road on January 21, 2009, over an allegation that he had attacked an ambulance crew that had come to help him.
He was held in relation to an allegation of causing fear of violence, and was detained following a medical examination by the defendant, it is claimed.
Mr Rymarzak died in police custody in the early hours of the following morning, with tests later identifying the cause of death as opiate and alcohol intoxication.
Dr El-Baroudy, of (48) Merston Drive, Didsbury, Manchester, denies a single charge of manslaughter.
