An arrogant knife-wielding brute who subjected a young mother
to a sick sex attack then arrogantly strolled across the road
to his home has been found guilty of rape.

Gary Oakley, 24, made no attempt to disguise his destination
from his distraught victim, who he had viciously raped in an
alleyway.

He had stalked her down the darkened lane after patting her
dog as she said goodnight to her boyfriend outside her parent’s
home in Thornton Heath.

There were gasps from the public gallery as the jury found
him guilty of rape, but Oakley showed no emotion.

He also remained impassive as he was found guilty of another
serious sexual assault (buggery) on the 24-year-old victim.

A woman in the public gallery broke down in tears at the
verdict.

The victim was staying in London after splitting up with
her husband.

Sentence on Oakley, a former pet shop worker of Virginia
Road, Thornton Heath, was adjourned for reports.

The jury had watched his victim, who suffers from a speech
impediment, break down in tears as she tried to describe how she
had been grabbed from behind in a lane off nearby Ingram Road.

Oakley, reeking of beer and armed with a penknife, pushed
her to the ground and held one hand hard against her throat
whilst stripping her with the other.

She shook and sobbed as she described how she was then raped
and subjected to other serious sexual assaults.

Afterwards, Oakley tried to arrange a ‘date’ with her for the
following evening, his victim told the court.

‘He said if I told my family, he would shoot them and shoot
me.

‘He told me to meet him the next day.

‘
Oakley then left and walked straight to his front door, in
full view of his victim.

He was found to have scratches on his hands as if struggling
with someone and gravel marks on his knees consistent with her
account.

But Oakley maintained he was the victim of mistaken identity
and coincidence.

In the witness box, he said he scuffled with a friend earlier
that night and the gravel marks were from kneeling in the road
whilst repairing a car.

Mr Charles Bott, defending, urged the jury to examine the
victim’s evidence ‘very, very carefully’ because she had made
separate sex allegations against two males relatives and another
man.

The jury of five women and seven men deliberated for more
than seven hours before returning majority guilty verdicts.

No date was set for sentence.
