Brent Council is to launch an investigation after the social service failures in the tragic case of little Anna Climbie.

They were given an anonymous tip-off about the ill treatment of the eight year-old girl by her adoptive mother Marie Therese Kouao in June 1999.

Anna died of hypothermia in February 2000.

The council said in a statement: ‘Brent Social Services wishes to express its deep concern over the tragic death of Anna Climbie.

‘The family was accommodated in Brent for three months.

Our contact with Anna was whilst she was at Central Middlesex Hospital overnight.

She was diagnosed and treated for a medical condition.

‘Anna and her aunt returned to their home (in Haringey) and there was no further contact with the family.

We passed on all relevant information to the local authority that had placed Anna and her aunt in Brent.

‘However we are presently investigating the actions taken by Brent Council, the local police and health agencies to see if there is anything more we could have done.

‘We will also be cooperating with the independent inter-agency review that has been set up.
