GMC Chairwoman Mrs Angela Macpherson said the committee had found Dr Stuart-Smith guilty of serious professional misconduct and ordered he be struck off the register.

She told him: ‘The public are entitled to have confidence that members of the medical profession are trustworthy and honest in character.

‘We are seriously concerned by the evidence we have heard in this case that you repeatedly engaged in a sado-masochistic relationship of an extreme kind, causing harm to a vulnerable person.

‘The committee have concluded that your behaviour has fallen seriously short of the standards the public are entitled to expect of registered medical practitioners.

‘

Dr Stuart-Smith, who now works in the pharmaceutical industry, shook his head as the decision was announced.

He has 28 days to appeal against the decision.
