The Hoover hurling husband
A father who shoved his wife to the ground after throwing a vacuum cleaner at her has been banned from contacting the victim.
Sanwar Hossain, 44, had separated from wife Ayesha Hossain following another incident of domestic violence but they got back together.
Hossain had received a police caution in 2009 for strangling her with a telephone cable.
But the father-of-three hurled pots and pans around in the kitchen during a furious row at their home on December 19 last year, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.
‘There was some dispute between the complainant and the defendant about the care he received from the doctor,’ said prosecutor Edward Cohen.
‘She went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea, she went to wash the dishes and he got more and more angry.
‘He pushed all the dishes from the counter onto the floor, breaking some of them.’
Hossain was swearing at his wife and she tried to calm him calm down because it was scaring the children.
Mr Cohen said at one point Hossain ‘threw a hoover’ towards his wife but it missed.
Hossain claimed he merely kicked the cleaner and denied hurling it at his partner.
But he continued the assault after Mrs Hossain went to the bedroom.
‘He continued swearing and then he took one hand and covered her face and pushed her back on to the bed with force,’ said Mr Cohen.
In a victim impact statement to the court Mrs Hossain said: ‘I am sad because of what happened, it was not expected, and I was assaulted in front of my children by my husband.
‘This has left my children scared, worried and confused.
‘They are stressed as well when they hear raised voices and it scares them.
‘I have had trouble sleeping due to concerns for my safety and for that of my children.’
Magistrate Jessica Baldwin said: ‘On the day of the trial the victim had to come to court and had to go through the idea that she was going to give testimony.
‘We believe it was a sustained assault – the incident started in the kitchen with swearing and throwing pots and pans and then you followed your wife into the bedroom.’
Hossain, of Hartford Road, Borehamwood, admitted assault by beating and was sentenced to 8 weeks suspended for 18 months.
In addition he must complete a 20 day rehabilitation requirement, 150 hours of unpaid work, pay prosecution costs of £350, a victim surcharge of £115 and has a restraining order preventing contact with his wife.
