Prisoner failed by medical staff before suicide

A prisoner found hanged in his cell while awaiting trial for stabbing two schoolboys was able to commit suicide because of a ‘gross failure to provide basic medical care’ an inquest jury has found. Richard Walsh, 43, was discovered hanging by a bed sheet from the light fitting in his single cell in Belmarsh Prison.
