A rookie cop became the victim of a frenzied knife
A rookie cop became the victim of a frenzied knifeman on
his first day on the beat alone, the Old Bailey heard.
PC Ian Slaney, 19, was still in his probationary period
when he became suspicious of David Moss, 24, who stared and
behaved ‘oddly’ as he walked past.
The officer was noting his description in Mare Street,
Hackney, when Moss walked back to him and said: ‘I hope that’s
got nothing to do with me because I’ve done nothing wrong.
‘
When PC Slaney tried to search Moss he said: ‘Right
that’s it.
I’m going to kill you,’ it was alleged.
Moss then drew a Gurkha ‘Kukri’ knife and stabbed PC
Slaney nine times in a brutal murder bid, the jury heard.
‘It was a frenzied, totally unprovoked attack,’ said
prosecutor Mr Simon Davis.
‘At one stage the defendant got on top of the officer
and gave him a couple of kicks.
‘
A passer-by who witnessed the attack said: ‘The officer
was screaming – the sort of sound that goes right through you.
‘The man was continually plunging the knife at the
police constable.
It was a savage attack.
He was behaving like a
maniac.
‘
Mr Davis said the eye witnesses were too ‘petrified’ to
help PC Slaney.
The officer, of Hackney police station, managed to
struggle free and radio for assistance.
Fortunately the Kukri was blunt and PC Slaney, who lives
with his parents in Romford, suffered only minor injuries to his
chest, back and forehead.
When Moss was cornered by reinforcements he allegedly
said: ‘I stabbed him up bad a couple of times.
I’m bad.
‘I stabbed in the heart, in the lungs, everywhere.
‘
At the police station Moss, who has a history of mental
illness, claimed the officer had attacked him.
‘I was frightened.
I stabbed him,’ he allgedly said.
Moss added he did not like speaking to police officers
and said: ‘He got what he deserved.
‘
When told PC Slaney was still alive Moss appeared to be
‘in some disbelief,’ said Mr Davis.
‘Are you sure he’s not dead, 100 per cent?’ he asked.
‘I don’t believe you.
I know what I did.
I don’t care.
‘
Moss of Anderson Road, Homerton, denies attempted murder
and wounding with intent on June 26 last year.
The trial continues.
