A top nightclub that used a picture of a huge half-naked woman holding her breasts and wearing a sombrero has been slated by advertising watchdogs.

Nightspot the Velvet Rooms used pictures of the tubby temptress in a Mexican hat to entice people to their club night ‘Ga Ga Thursdays’ in Glasgow.

The Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint that the nightclub’s leaflet was ‘offensive, distasteful and an affront to public decency’.

The nightclub defended the flier by arguing that it had struck a blow for the rights of fat women everywhere.

The Velvet Rooms claimed it was ‘not offensive for a larger woman to be photographed in a similar manner as more ‘fashionable’ models.

The club also argued that the leaflet was targeted at 18-20 year old students and believed the target audience would not find it offensive.

The reverse of the flier, for ‘Goo Goo’ Tuesdays featured a picture of a man in a baby’s outfit holding a pint of beer, a cigarette and teddy bear.

The ASA said ‘it considered the leaflet was likely to cause serious or widespread offence.

‘

It asked the club, at (520) Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow to consult the ASA’s Committee of Advertising Practice Copy Advice team when devising future leaflets.
