A vicious thug who knifed his pregnant girlfriend

A vicious thug who knifed his pregnant girlfriend in the neck and body, forcing her into premature labour, was locked up for four years today.

Anique Bazil, 18, said blood spurted out from her gaping wounds like water from ‘a garden hose.

‘

To protect her unborn baby the brave teenage mum kept her back to 20-year-old Adrian Hinkson as he stabbed her repeatedly with a kitchen knife.

Hinkson then left Miss Bazil, the mother of his child, fearing she might bleed to death as he prevented her from seeking urgent medical help.

Finally when he allowed Miss Bazil to go to hospital she went into labour.

Fortunately her healthy baby daughter was delivered by Caesarean section.

But the mum will be forced to recall her ordeal every year when she celebrates her daughter’s birthday on January 22, Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court heard.

Hinkson had accompanied Miss Bazil to a hospital check-up shortly before the attack.

Kathryn Hirst, prosecuting, said doctors told Miss Bazil her baby was due any day soon.

But she was sent home as she was not ready to go into labour.

Miss Hirst said the tearful defendant erupted in anger when they got back to Miss Bazil’s home in Balcombe Street, in London’s West End.

‘In the flat they had an argument about something petty,’ continued the prosecutor.

‘There came a point when she was sitting on the bed when he kicked her and left her.

‘He went back to the kitchen and came back with an eight-inch kitchen knife.

‘He was holding it towards her threateningly and moved towards her – and stabbed her.

‘He can’t remember the order in which she was stabbed but remembers clearly she had been stabbed in the neck, and remembers the knife coming sideways from behind.

‘She described blood spurting like out of a garden hose from her neck and was terrified she would bleed to death.

‘

Hinkson also stabbed her twice on top of her spine, in her armpit and in her back.

‘She was stabbed in the back because of her actions to protect her stomach and protect her child,’ Miss Hirst said.

Despite the sickening wounds, Hinkson refused to call an ambulance, but gave her a cloth to staunch the flow of blood.

He also offered her a drink of water which she found too painful to swallow.

She washed up the knife and put it on the draining board herself, on Hinkson’s orders, Miss Hirst said.

Miss Bazil initially told the ambulance crew that she had been stabbed in the street – a story police did not believe.

In hospital, Miss Bazil underwent a Caesarean (corr) section.

After questioning the new mum gave the full story – and a search was launched for Hinkson.

Miss Bazil now suffers partial paralysis of her face due to a severed nerve – and finds it physically impossible to smile.

Hinkson fled to Birmingham after the attack but was arrested at his own home in (140) Gage Road, Canning Town four days later after police called him on
his mobile.

Miss Hirst said he made full admissions in a police interview – but could not explain ‘his intentions or motivation.

‘

After Hinkson’s arrest, Miss Bazil told police he had also punched her on January 13.

The defendant wrote a letter to the trial judge saying that he was making ‘plans for the future’ with Miss Bazil – something the girl and her family disputed.

John Hardy, defending, said Hinkson was a man of previous good character, and had no mental illness.

Mr Hardy said he was ‘unable to control the torrential emotions that arise in a first love where that relationship is beginning to fragment and dissolve and prompted this young man to behave as he did.

‘

But Mr Hardy added: ‘He’s determined he’ll never lose his temper again.

‘

Hinkson, of Gage Road, Canning Town, admitted wounding Miss Bazil with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a further charge of assaulting her causing actual bodily harm.

Wearing a blue tracksuit he showed no emotion as Judge Henry Blacksell QC sentenced him to four years for wounding with six months concurrent for assault on January 22 this year.

The judge told Hinkson: ‘The attack was a terrible act you perpetrated on her and potentially her young child.

‘

Judge Blacksell said Miss Bazil will carry the scars for the rest of her life.

Hinkson will start his sentence in a young offenders institution, but will be later transferred to an adult jail.
