POLICE smashed a major gun trafficking ring yesterday recovering a stash of
heavy duty weaponry from a residential address in Woodford Green.

Special operations officers seized a missile launcher, hand grenades, four
heavy machine guns, a MP40 machine pistol, explosives and a quantity of
ammunition in raid on a Monkhams Lane house.

It is believed the guns were destined to be used by the London underworld
for carrying out contract killings, armed robberies and drug related crime.

The officer in charge of the operation said the Met has made a pre-emptive
strike against organised crime as firearms of this magnitude have never been
used by criminals in London.

Detective Chief Superintendent, John Coles, said: “This is top of the
range equipment.

“We have not had any weaponry like this used in armed robberies yet.

“Some major criminal activity has been prevented in the London area.

“This was an intelligence lead operation.

We have cracked a major armours
for London based criminals.

”

The artillery cache was discovered after three people were arrested while
selling machine guns in Benfleet Cemetery, Essex.

A chase across London then resulted in two more arrests in Bethnal Green
leading officers from the serious and organised crime command to the
Woodford Green address.

When officers executed the search warrant the premises was empty.

Police say they have seized the biggest ever arms cache intended to supply
London criminals.

A sixth man was later arrested in Wickford, Essex.

The men, who are all British, are being held at separate police stations in
East London and Essex.
