Dr Bhattacharyya told police he said ”Oh God” because his bleeper was warning him there was an emergency in the resuscitation room.
He said: ‘Her husband was just outside and there were a lot of people around.
She was quite happy and she was consenting to the examination.
‘While I was doing the rectal examination my bleeper went off.
I looked what it said and it was the number.
‘That’s where the ”Oh God” came from.
I probably breathe a bit heavily anyway but I was not panting.
‘This accusation it is really disgraceful.
I literally ran to the resuscitation room because I knew things were building up and people could be dying.
‘I reassured her it was simply constipation.
‘
He said he asked the 43 year-old hairdresser to lift up her bra because could not hear her heart in the busy hospital.
‘Breast cancer is a big risk factor for having a clot in the leg.
I wanted to make sure she did not have a cancer sitting there.
‘
Expert witness Dr Janet Porter said she could not think of any reason why the doctor needed to carry out a rectal examination.
She said: ‘A basic medical examination does not include a rectal examination.
To cause pain in the legs any tumour in the abdomen would have to be very advanced.
‘My view is it was also not appropriate for him to investigate her constipation.
It is unrelated to her presenting symptoms.
‘And I cannot think of any cause of pain in the legs which could be elucidated with an examination of the chest.
‘
The hearing continues tomorrow (TUES).
