SIXTH-FORMER REMANDED OVER ATTACK ON BETTING SHOP

A rioting sixth-form college student was remanded in custody after hurling a paving stone through the front window of a betting shop in Brixton.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is said to have joined a 30-strong mob as it trashed shops before attacking police who were trying to quell the disorder.

He was arrested following a police raid on his Camberwell home on Saturday, August 13.

The court heard that the youth allegedly joined rioters for more than an hour on the evening of August 7.

During the chaos in and around Moland Road, he is said to have donned a bandana as he helped smash the front window of a branch of William Hill, and to have been present as bins were set alight.

The youth, whose mother attended court with him, is expected to deny violent disorder when his case his heard at the crown court.

Adjourning the case until August 18, District Judge Tan Ikram refused an offer of a £1,000 surety to bail him.
