He smashed open a cashpoint to grab £19k – and will serve seven months
A cashpoint raider posed as a security guard to drill into a service station ATM and grab £19,200, a court heard.
Tommy Stevenson, 28, was injured when he fell over climbing a fence to escape and had to shout to officers for help.
They had arrived at the BP station in Horsham Road, Alfold, Surrey, to find him lying behind a fence at the far end of the forecourt.
He was wearing a dark cap with the word ‘security’ written on it and had gloves and a walkie talkie.
In his a backpack was the drilling equipment used to break open the cashpoint in the early hours of December 4 last year.
Stevenson, of Dalmeny Way, Epsom, has refused to name his four accomplices and the money has never been traced.
He appeared at Guildford Crown Court today (Thurs)and was jailed for 14 months after he admitted theft.
Detective Constable Claire Jones from western division’s CID said: ‘Stevenson initially tried to convince officers that he had been out for a night-time walk, but the equipment he was carrying, the CCTV footage and the large sum of money missing from the machine were irrefutable evidence that he was one of those responsible for this theft from an ATM.
‘I am pleased that Stevenson will be off our streets for some time as a result of today’s sentence, and we continue to look for the accomplices who seemingly abandoned him to his fate.’
