Accused gem raiders battle extradition
Three alleged gem raiders accused of stealing jewellery worth nearly £700,000 from a high-end store in Tokyo are battling against extradition to Japan.
Joe Anthony Chappell, 35, Kane Lee Wright, 25, and Daniel Kelly, 43, allegedly plotted to steal jewellery worth 106,272 million Japanese Yen (£690,000) from the Harry Winston Omotesando Hills Salon.
Prosecutor Pharat Gupta earlier told Westminster Magistrates’ Court: ‘Mr Kelly, along with two others, travelled together to Tokyo to commit essentially a smash and grab robbery on a jewellery store.’
The men allegedly assaulted a store worker while they stole 46 high value items.
Mr Gupta said they had arrived in Tokyo on November 20, 2015 and flew back to the UK two days later.
All three men appeared in court via video-link from custody as their extradition hearing was set for July 22.
