Cop accused of assaulting woman after she consented twice
A Met Police officer raped a woman when she said she did not want intercourse again after having sex with him twice, a court heard.
PC Rupert Edwards, 30, also attacked a second women who enjoyed consensual sex acts with him but did not want intercourse, jurors heard.
Edwards met the first woman at the Slug and Lettuce in Richmond, southwest London, on August 22 last year.
‘She continued drinking and dancing and started to dance with the defendant,’ said prosecutor Robert Brown
‘At about 1am she, the defendant and a couple of others went on to another bar, this time in Clapham and stayed until 3am.’
‘During her time at this bar, the woman remembered kissing the defendant, who she found attractive.
‘She ended up getting a cab with the defendant back to her address, dropping another friend off en route.
‘In her flat she changed into her bed clothes and then went into her bedroom with the defendant where they had consensual sexual intercourse at least once, possibly twice.
‘After this she was tired and felt too sore for any further sex.’
But Edwards wanted to have sex again, is is claimed.
‘The defendant tried to initiate further sexual intercourse by pulling her leg up,’ Mr Brown said.
‘She said that she told him that “I can’t go again, I’m raw.”
‘But the defendant pulled her leg up again and then penetrated her vagina with his penis from behind.
‘The woman did not say anything further to him but she is clear that she did not consent to this act of penetration and that the defendant knew that she did not and carried on regardless.
‘The woman then went to sleep until about noon the next day, at which point the defendant left.
‘She tried to put the incident out of her mind and get on with her life… but she found out that the defendant had been suspended after an allegation had been made by another woman.’
She confided in a friend, who reported the matter to the police on 25 November 2022.
The second woman said on September 4, 2022 she had been at the Ship pub in Wandsworth with friends.
‘She was drinking and dancing and at one point began talking to the defendant who was there with his friends,’ said Mr Brown.
‘The woman remembered kissing the defendant and then getting a cab with him back to her address.
‘Once at her address she recalled that she and the defendant engaged in
consensual sexual activity.
‘But she said from the outset that there could be no vaginal intercourse as they did not have any condoms.
‘The defendant agreed to this and was happy to do “other sexual acts”, which they did.
‘The woman eventually went to sleep but was awoken by the defendant who had penetrated her vagina with his penis.
‘She asked him what he was doing and told him to leave. The defendant apologized and left.
‘She later confronted him by text.
‘She said that she was angry and confused because he had told her that he was a police officer and so she sent him a text thanking him for destroying her faith in the justice system.
‘At 04:59 she called 999 and reported the incident to the police.’
When Edwards was arrested he said the woman had never said that she did not want sexual intercourse without contraception.
‘He said they had engaged in consensual sexual activity including vaginal intercourse and that she was awake throughout.’
He made no further comment.
Edwards, of Ashtead, Surrey, denies two counts of rape.
The trial continues.
