Firms fined over £1m after labourer was ‘buried alive’ under soil
Two construction firms were fined a total of £1.1m after a Romanian labourer was crushed to death under tonnes of soil when the trench he was digging collapsed in a ‘barely believable’ accident. Gheorghhita Arsene, 33, was using a pick and shovel to excavate the ten-foot deep pit by hand at a care home in Banstead, Surrey. The sides of the trench had not been properly secured and Mr Arsene died when the trench caved in on top of him….
