A first year medical student at Guy’s Hospital die
A first year medical student at Guy’s Hospital died from a
diabetes attack, an inquest heard.
Eighteen-year-old Lawrence Davies was found dead in his room
at the hospital’s student halls in Lambeth Road, Southwark, by a
friend on February 14 1993.
He is believed to have died after collapsing more than 12
hours earlier when his blood sugar level fell to a dangerous low.
Medical student Petros Moschat, who found the body, said the
student had suffered a similar attack a week before his death when
they had gone to the cinema.
He said Mr Davies had suddenly begun to shake and could not
walk.
Realising that he was having a attack, he rushed out to buy
him some chocolate.
He said that within 20 minutes Mr Davies was back on his feet
again.
The court was told Mr Davies had been diabetic since the age
of 12.
He was a bright teenager who had a promising career ahead of
him in the medical world.
The post mortem revealed he had probably died around February
12.
He had slipped into a sudden coma after his sugar level in his
blood had plummeted.
Recording a verdict of natural causes, Sir Montague Levine
said: ‘This is a terrible tragedy.
‘
He was a very happy boy who was doing very well at medical
school.
‘
‘We shall never know how his death transpired, but the most
likely scenario is that his blood sugar dropped while he was
sleeping.
‘
He gave the cause of death as diabetes.
