A victim of a gun gang who opened fire on a queue
A victim of a gun gang who opened fire on a queue of nightclub revellers told the Old Bailey today (Tues) how he was shot trying to escape the hail of bullets.
Eight people were wounded when Roderick Gray, 21, and three others allegedly opened fire at Chicago’s in Peckham, southeast London because Gray lost face over a failed drugs deal.
Victim Gerol McKenzie described how he felt his shoulder ‘jump’ as a bullet hit his shoulder.
The Jamaican 25-year-old said he had gone to the club with a friend Rohan Edwards and two girls to watch ‘Stone Love’ in concert.
As they approached the club, Mr McKenzie said he noticed two men standing ‘close enough to touch me.
‘
‘I saw one of them had a gun in his left hand, waving it, and telling people to get out of the way,’ Mr McKenzie.
‘He pointed the gun towards Rohan behind me and I pushed him (the gunman) and his feet slipped off the sidewalk.
‘
Mr McKenzie said he saw the second man ‘standing staring at me’ and he decided to run towards Camberwell.
‘I ran past Tasties and there were lots of people falling down in front of me.
‘When I reached down where the stop light was I felt my shoulder jump and I knew I had been hit by a bullet.
‘
Mr McKenzie said as he ran for safety he looked back to see his friend Rohan Edwards lined up in the gunman’s sights.
‘I saw him pointing the gun at Rohan.
I heard shots coming out of it.
It was the same man with the gun.
‘I ran into a BP garage.
While I was running down the road I was stopping lots of vehicles but none of them would stop.
‘I saw a man filling gas.
I told him I had been hit by a bullet and he took me to hospital.
The witness claimed he recognised Gray from previous visits to Chicago’s and on another trip to the Elephant and Castle area when out driving with a pal three days before the shooting.
Mr McKenzie confirmed he picked out Gray at an identity parade as one of the gunmen on October 20 at Brixton police station.
‘He did the shooting.
The man I saw with the gun.
‘
‘Was there any doubt you identified the right man?’ asked prosecutor Martin Hicks.
‘There’s no doubt in my mind,’ replied Mr McKenzie.
The court has heard Mr Edwards, was shot twice in the shoulder and chest during the gun attack.
Experts later discovered the two men had been shot using two different handguns and ammunition from a distance of two metres.
Bebita Jackto, 15, fell to the ground as she tried to escape not realising at first she had been shot in the chest.
Five other innocent club-goers received gunshot wounds as they fled the scene.
Gray, who was living in Fleet St, Derby was arrested on October 18.
He denies eight charges of attempted murder and one of possessing a handgun with intent to endanger life following the incident on July 31 last year.
The trial continues.
