Fibres from Holly and Jessica’s Manchester United tops were found on Huntley’s clothing and all over his house, the court heard.
The distinctive dyed material was traced to the main bedroom, the duvet cover, the bedsheet, the carpets and the car.
Fibres from clothes found in Huntley and Carr’s home were also found on Holly and Jessica’s shirts, the jury heard.
In total there were 49 fibres from both shirts ‘which is either on or can be linked to Huntley,’ said Mr Latham.
‘The fibres got into that house and they matched the girls’ shirts.
‘And it is not just fibres from the girls’ shirts.
They were over many items.
‘
They were picked up by sticky tape placed on the clothing or the carpet and furnishings.
Chemical tests identified both the type of fibre and the type of dye of the fibre.
The QC said the fibres could have been transferred directly from the shirts or by secondary transfer from another source.
He added: ‘Very many of these shirts were sold worldwide.
‘Over a million of these shirts went into distribution of this particular type.
I do not suppose that will surprise you.
‘
He said Holly and Jessica’s shirts were ‘indistinguishable’ from each other by the fibres.
But he added: ‘They were cut at the time they were removed from the girls.
‘We suggest that made them much better shedders of fibre than if they remained intact.
‘We suggest the most likely recipient of fibre transfer would be the cutter.
‘
Mr Latham said: ‘The scientists found fibres on Huntley’s clothes and on the carpets and on other items from the house which matched precisely the fibres from each of the Manchester United shirts.
‘These shirts were either cut in the house or cut by Huntley in the ditch and then carried by him at some stage back to the Hangar and he got shirt fibre on himself and went into the house.
‘Then there is always the potential thereafter that having got fibres on what he was wearing, that some of them would drop off in the house.
‘
A video demonstration detailed the fibres found during the investigation.
There were 15 fibres from the Man Utd tops on a male shirt found in the house, three on a pair of beige trousers, one on a grey fleece, one on a jacket, one on a left shoe, two on the car boot carpet, two on a bath mat, two on the carpet from the main bedroom, three from the main living room carpet, two from the hallway, one from the front doorway carpet, two on the stairs, one in the hall, two in a bedroom cupboard, one on a seat cover, six from furniture from the living room, one from dusters, one from the duvet in the main bedroom and two from the bed sheet.
On Jessica’s shirt there were 12 fibres from carpet offcuts found in the house and the car boot.
Mr Latham said this showed Huntley may have replaced the fitted boot carpet after using the vehicle to take the bodies away.
There were a total of 39 fibres on Jessica’s shirt including those from a brown jacket, a pair of trousers, three blue tops, two pairs of identical trousers, the curtains in the house, a cardigan and a jumper.
Holly’s shirt had a total of 38 such ‘two-way transfers’ including fibres from the carpet in the car and other clothing.
The trial continues.
