In a statement Julia’s family – father David, 54, mother Janet, 49, and sister Hannah, 18, said they were unhappy with the verdict.

It said: “Mr and Mrs Duffy are disappointed that in his verdict the Deputy Coroner did not make reference to their concerns about the quality of care provided to Julia.

”

They said they believe she should have been fed with a tube while at St Mary’s between January 25 and March 11, 2002.

Mr Duffy added: “We have all been affected.

There was always hope when she was alive.

Julia was a character – she had a sense of humour and was determined.

We will remember her fondly.

”
