A man accused of hurling homophobic abuse at comedian Eddie Izzard claims he was beaten up by two gay men in a revenge attack in Soho, a court heard today (Tue).
Jamie Penny, 24, allegedly threatened to ‘do’ the 54-year-old funnyman’s house in Hugh Street, Pimlico, central London, on 3 April.
Penny’s temper is said to have flared when Izzard refused him and a friend a lift in his 1958 Volkswagen Beetle.
A month later he saw the stand-up again in nearby Gillingham Street and branded him a ‘f**king poofter’, it is claimed.
He is now charged with two counts of using threatening and abusive words or behaviour.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) are treating the second alleged offence as a hate crime.
Today (tue) Penny shouted ‘I didn’t say nothing to Eddie Izzard, he’s a f**king liar’ during a chaotic hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
He and his mother have now turned down the services of three solicitors, claiming they are yet to find one who is ‘autism-acknowledgeable’.
Dressed all in black and wearing shades, his mother sat outside the dock and said: ‘The world doesn’t understand him and he doesn’t understand the world.’
Penny ranted at the press throughout the hearing.
District Judge Jeremy Coleman said: ‘If he’s pleading not guilty to something I then fix a hearing date in the future.’
Penny said: ‘Wait wait wait wait. I’m not going to plead today.’
‘I have been abused by two gay men in Soho, assaulted.’
He continued: ‘Assaulted because I have been in the paper, lies told about me.
‘I didn’t say nothing to Eddie Izzard, he’s a f*cking liar.
‘I’m not entering a plea, sorry mate.’
Judge Coleman replied: ‘I’m not your mate.’
Penny turned his attention to the press in court and fumed: ‘Who’s this man in the public gallery? I want him to get arrested.
‘You have got people writing stuff about me in the paper.’
Penny’s mother was told to leave after sidling up to a reporter in the public gallery and saying: ‘You smug little b*stard.’
Her son continued: ‘As I have said, my dad died this week, I have had too many problems, I have been assaulted twice because of the lies that have been put in the paper.’
Judge Coleman said: ‘What I’m going to do in the circumstances is to enter not guilty pleas and we will look for a hearing date.
‘And that will mean you will have plenty of time to look for a lawyer in the future.’
Penny observed: ‘That’s why it’s all a big f*cking conspiracy you’ve got people here writing stuff about me because people all f*cking dress as women.’
Judge Coleman released Penny on conditional bail until a hearing at Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court on 25 November.
He has been ordered not to go to Hugh Street or to contact Izzard.
After Judge Coleman rose, Penny said: ‘It doesn’t matter anyway you got the street wrong so I can go there now you silly c*nts.’
Penny, of Tintern House, Abbots Manor Estate, Pimlico, south London, will next appear at Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court on 25 November.
He has now formally denied the charges.
