Kevin Spacey appears in court to face further allegations
Oscar winning actor Kevin Spacey appeared in court charged with seven more sexual offences dating back 21 years.
Appearing over video link today from an unknown location in the Middle East ,the 63-year-old American Beauty faces charges for three indecent assaults and four sexual assaults between 2001 and 2004.
His indictment reads that the actor carried out offences involving grabbing, squeezing and touching of the victim’s genitals and buttocks over clothing.
All offences are said to have been carried out on the same victim.
He gave his full name as Kevin Spacey Fowler and confirmed his date of birth of 26 July 1959.
Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner, is well known for starring in films such as Seven, LA Confidential and Baby Driver. He has most recently starred in Netflix’s popular series House of Cards.
In July this year he was the first Hollywood star to appear at the Old Bailey, facing four other charges of sexual assault and one charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
These charges are said to have been carried out against three men during the time Spacey was artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre.
The first two charges relate to alleged sexual assaults on a man, now in his 40s, in London on 20 March 2005.
The second alleged victim, a man now in his 30s, claims he was sexually assaulted by Spacey in London on August 31, 2008.
Spacey also faces a serious sexual offence charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent relating to the second alleged victim.
He faces a fourth charge of sexual assault against the third complainant, now in his 30s, in Gloucestershire in April 2013.
Speaking of Spacey’s five initial charges, his defence barrister Patrick Gibbs, KC, said: ‘Mr Spacey strenuously denies any and all criminality in this case.’
The actor has vowed to ‘establish his innocence’.
Spacey’s trial date for the five sex attacks and the additional seven today is set for 6 June 2023, to be heard at either Southwark Crown Court or the Old Bailey.
He was granted unconditional bail ahead of his next court appearance at Southwark Crown Court on 13 January for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
Appearing over video link, Spacey wore a dark suit and light blue tie to the backdrop of a beige curtain.
Zoe Martin, prosecuting, told the court: ‘These offences are related to an indictable-only matter that is due to stand trial on the 6th June.’
Patrick Gibbs, KC, for the defence said: ‘There is sufficient factual nexus that they can be joined together.’
Mistakenly believing Spacey was appearing from the US, Chief Magistrates Paul Goldspring quipped: ‘Well, he wouldn’t have got here from the airport would he, with the rail strikes?
‘In any event, I would have granted the CVP link from wherever he may be.’
Speaking to Spacey, Judge Goldspring said: ‘In relation to the seven charges you face, the new charges, (…) I formally send your case to the Crown Court sitting at Southwark.
‘Your appearance will be on the 13 January next year at Southwark.’
He warned Spacey that he is obliged to attend on that date in the morning otherwise a warrant may be issued for his arrest.
