McDonagh was further shamed when he learnt his name will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years.

Defence counsel John Lucas told the court: ‘It is not the most serious of incidents.

He’s had a lesson that he must not behave like that.

‘In giving him a conditional discharge for the maximum 18 months he will have the opportunity to behave properly.

‘He has spent a night in a police cell which gave him a short, sharp, shock which caused him quite a lot of upset.

‘

But Judge Focke refused to turn the other cheek.

He said he did not regard the defendant’s conduct as ‘trivial’.

He told McDonagh he was considering a custodial sentence as a deterrent to the way he behaved.

Sentencing was adjourned until August 30.
