Nurse Doreen Armstrong was given a caution by the UKCC committee today (Tues) after being found guilty of professional misconduct.

The committee agreed Armstrong had failed to take appropriate action after patient C had been given double the prescribed dose of antipsychotic drugs.

She allowed him to attend a day centre rather than keeping at the home for observation and failed to record her observations in the notes.

Mrs Armstrong, who previously worked on the renal unit at Nottingham City Hospital, was sacked by Aslockton Hall on January 20 last year after two disciplinary hearings.

But the nurse was cleared of three other counts of misconduct.

She absolved of blame for the incorrect set-up of the syringe machine at a near-useless rate of drug administration due to lack of evidence.

The committee also found her not to be at fault for failing to report the error with the pump, and failing to take action when she became aware that patient Mr B was being give a higher dose of antidepressant than prescribed.

Witness Elsie Marshall, deputy matron at the Aslockton Hall Private Nursing Home, said the mistake had been made by several staff after the supplies changed to a double strength tablet.

Committee Chairman Elizabeth Rush said: ‘Mrs Armstrong has demonstrated her conduct is well below the standards expected of a registered nurse.

‘The committee have decided that although her actions are regarded as professional misconduct her name should not be removed from the register.

‘The committee are satisfied there was no malice intended and we do not feel she is a threat to the public.

‘In the facts found not proved the committee did not find these allegations proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The caution will be kept on Mrs Armstrong’s record for five years.
