Tom Cressman wrote a letter to spurned Jane Andrews blaming her ‘jealousies and insecurity’ for the failure of their relationship, the court heard.

The undated handwritten note was found torn in half in the bin at the couple’s house in Fulham.

It read: ‘Dearest Janey, I do care about you.

Yes, times have been difficult for us over the last year but I do like you and like being with you.

‘However, over the last few months I have felt I have been walking on eggshells all the time.

Your mood swings have been so hard to predict.

‘I have tried and tried to make you happy and do things for you but it has never seemed to be enough.

‘Your jealousy has also gotten out of hand.

I wanted to see Isabelle for a drink with you when she passed by last week.

‘I have known her since we were 24 and I just felt that you would always be asking me 10,000,000 questions when all she is is a childhood chum who I bumped into every few years.

‘You question me every day and you will not let me do anything with the boys and without you.

This has just gotten too much.

‘It was my fault for not being harder towards you.

I do realise the hard times you have had and wanted to make things better.

‘What I have said over the last few days do seem like total rejection to you – it’s not.

But you have to work out the problems you have that go back over a long way.

‘Your insecurity and jealousies are not things you can change overnight.

They take a lot of work.

I can only do so much.

‘You are special and must realise that we must make you better before putting so much faith in someone else.

‘A couple is two halves not one whole or three quarters and the other taking up the rest.

I do not thing I am all great but you have been making me all of your life and it is too much pressure on me.

‘I must be part of your life – not all.

The same for you.

I do hate to see you so upset.

Whatever I say is wrong.

I do care.

The jury then listened to Jane Andrews’ police interview.

She claimed her boyfriend ‘snapped’ and tried to choke her after she challenged him about his internet girlfriend.

Andrews had accused him of ‘changing his mind every five minutes’ about their relationship on the way back from holiday in France.

She said: ‘Eventually we did talk for the first time and he said “I have got problems” and we should go and see a counsellor.

‘I said does that mean the relationship is carrying on.

He said yes but I have got to get over my problems.

‘I know that he has a problem with his parents’ divorce and sharing things with anybody.

This was a breakthrough.

They arrived back home on the evening of Friday, September 15.

‘We got in the house and things seemed fine.

We went to bed and he cuddled up to me and we made love.

‘

But the next morning he refused to talk about seeing a counsellor and was in a ‘furious mood’, she said.

‘He suddenly just changed his mind again.

We just started to argue.

I said I might as well just not be here.

He said fine, you should kill yourself.

‘He came back with two Stanley knife blades and he put it down on the window in my dressing room.

He said let’s flick for it and whoever says heads or tails kills themselves first.

‘We argued and I was shouting at him.

I then said why has he just changed again, had he been on the internet to this woman in America.

‘He just snapped and hit me.

I slapped him across the face and he grabbed me by the neck and squeezed my neck.

I just, I don’t know, pushed him away.

Mr Cressman then made his 999 phone call to the police, she said.
