A football star’s cousin bought a rival double glazing firm’s
handbook to try to steal their customers, it was claimed today (Thurs).

Self employed salesman Lee Samways, 28 – cousin of Tottenham
Hotspur’s Vinny Samways, who helped his team win the 1991 FA Cup –
allegedly owned up to buying the customer records ledger in a
pub for pnds stlg 50.

A jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how the stolen document
was part of the proceeds of a burglary at Chingford-based Anglian
Windows on March 12 this year.

Mr Tristan Chaize, prosecuting, said that after initial entry to
the building was gained with an office key an inner door was kicked
in.

‘Items were stolen and in particular a red book which contained
names and addresses of potential customers.

‘
On March 25 police attended a rival double glazing firm called
Zenith, based in Cranbrook Road, Barkingside, and during a search
found the red book.

Mr Chaize continued: ‘They spoke to a young lady in a little
booth where she was phoning people and trying to sell double glazing.

‘Shortly afterwards the defendant arrived at the office and went
straight to the manager’s office.

He said the book was down to him and
nothing to do with the young lady using it.

‘
Samways allegedly told police that he paid pnds stlg 50 for the
book in a pub.

During interviews he said that several months earlier he started
working with Zenith after being sacked by Anglia.

Samways allegedly confirmed to detectives that the transaction
took place involving a fellow salesman in a pub and added that he knew
about the book ‘because everyone knows about everyone else’s business
in the glazing trade.

‘
Smartly dressed Samways, of Dale View Crescent, Chingford, East
London, denies handling the stolen book between March 11 and March 26
this year.

The trial continues tomorrow (Fri).
