A ‘brazen’ burglar who had a story ready-made if he was
caught, has been jailed for 30 months.
Michael Saloman, 33, claimed he had seen a front door of a flat
in Norwood Road, Herne Hill, wide open and had gone in to investigate
after ‘seeing two black guys run out.
‘
When he was challenged by householder Earl Newman, 35, who refused
to believe his story, Saloman violently lashed out.
The two men grappled until a passing police car noticed the
fracas and intervened.
Saloman, of no fixed address, denied burglary and assaulting
Mr Newman, causing him actual bodily harm on April 3 this year.
But an Old Bailey jury convicted him.
Judge Nina Lowry QC told Saloman, who has a history of mental
problems: ‘This was a mean form of burglary, and you had a story ready
if you were caught.
‘I have seen no sign of remorse.
‘
Saloman was jailed for two years for the assault and a further six
months for the burglary, making 30 months in all.
