The jury later heard how massive media coverage of the rape in March 1985 forced Duffy and Mulcahy to pick a different area for their next attacks.
They allegedly worked their way along the railway line from Hampstead, checking all the individual stations for a suitable victim.
Duffy and Mulcahy finally arrived in Hackney Wick station, east London, on December 28, 1985, and saw 19-year-old Alison Day get off a train.
Miss Day, from Romford, Essex, was dragged along the platform to a tow-path near the River Lea, where the pair both raped her.
Duffy later told police that Mulcahy asked him to look for an escape route, but as he did so Miss Day fell off a bridge into the river.
When Duffy hauled her out, she tried to run away – but the pair caught up with her.
Mulcahy then bundled the teenager into woods and raped her again, before marching her across a field.
There, he allegedly told Duffy that she had to die because she had seen their faces.
Mulcahy ripped off her blouse and used it to gag and bind her, before wrapping a piece of the material round her neck.
He forced Miss Day to her knees, and then used a piece of wood to twist the ligature and kill her.
Miss Day was found dumped in the River Lea two weeks later.
For their next attack, Duffy and Mulcahy hatched a sickening plot to use a fishing line to snare Maartje Tamboezer after spotting her cycling along a footpath.
The pair had each taken an afternoon off work on April 17, 1986, and travelled to East Horsley, Surrey, where Mulcahy allegedly claimed to have found a ‘new place’.
As they lurked near a footpath, they saw the 15-year-old Dutch schoolgirl ride past on her bike, on the way to buy sweets.
Mulcahy is said to have turned to Duffy and joked: ‘What goes up must come down’ – meaning that they would grab the teenager on her return journey.
They then stretched a transparent strand of fishing wire across the path at a height of three foot – and waited.
Mr Dennis said: ‘It worked.
Miss Tamboezer was seized and bundled from her bicycle to the field nearby.
‘When she let out a scream, the defendant slapped her round the face and warned her she would be hurt if she didn’t keep quiet.
‘She was then forced down and raped by Duffy as the defendant kept watch.
The defendant became increasingly agitated and aggressive as she offered resistance.
‘
Suddenly, as they prepared to leave, Mulcahy allegedly clubbed the youngster round the head with a stone, knocking her unconscious.
It is claimed he took off her belt and tied it round her neck, again using a piece of wood to make a tourniquet.
He then allegedly told Duffy: ‘It’s your turn to do it.
We are in this together – I did the last one, you do this one.
‘
Mr Dennis said: ‘Duffy took over and twisted the wood, killing the victim.
‘
Duffy claims he then went back to the station while Mulcahy stayed at the scene to get rid of any fingerprints.
Miss Tamboezer’s half-burned body was found by search teams the following day.
The pair’s final killing came just over a month later, on April 18, the jury was told.
They went to Brookmans Park railway station in Herts and, finding a woman’s bike in the cycle shed, decided to lay a trap.
Duffy said he and Mulcahy hid the bike near a fence, and waited for its owner to return.
When 29-year-old newlywed Anne Lock got off a train and opened the shed door, she was grabbed by the pair.
Mrs Lock, a secretary at LWT, was frogmarched a ‘considerable distance’ to a footpath next to the railway line where she was forced to the ground and raped by Duffy.
Mr Dennis said: ‘When it came to the defendant’s turn, he told Duffy to return to the village while he stayed with the girl.
‘
Mulcahy allegedly told Duffy: ‘Take your time.
‘
The jury heard it is not known exactly what happened next, but Mrs Lock’s badly-decomposed body was found two months later in undergrowth.
A tourniquet was round her neck, and the killer had again tried unsuccessfully to burn the corpse.
Duffy, who was found not guilty of her murder on a judge’s direction in 1988, has since admitted raping Mrs Lock.
It is believed that after Duffy left them, Mulcahy frogmarched Mrs Lock across fields to the undergrowth, where he murdered her.
Mr Dennis added: ‘The evidence suggests she was forced across and further abused before finally being killed.
‘All the circumstances serve to highlight the callousness of the deed that had taken place.
