A crazed thug, jailed for life for stabbing a love

A crazed thug, jailed for life for stabbing a love rival through the heart, screamed abuse at the police as he was dragged from an Old Bailey dock today.

Mark Thompson, 29, hurled the abuse after his 50-year-old father David broke down in tears when he was jailed for nine years for his role in the brutal knifing of Alan Hutchins.

And as the pair were led away, the psychopath’s sobbing mum screamed, ‘I love you’ from the public gallery.

Jealous father-of-three Alan Hutchins, 48, had flown into a rage when he discovered his ex-wife was sleeping with Mark.

The Thompsons and a third man, all armed with knives, burst into the victim’s Islington home the day after Valentine’s Day this year.

Despite trying to defend himself with a Samurai sword, Mr Hutchins was stabbed more than a dozen times.

He miraculously survived the attack after doctors performed open heart surgery.

Passing sentence Judge Harold Wilson said Thompson snr should have restrained his son.

‘When the victim tried to defend himself, you continued to go after him and stabbed him so severely that when he arrived in the hospital he was in a moribund state.

‘You took the law into your own hands and such conduct can not be tolerated in civilised society.

‘You, David Thompson, should have exercised a parental restraining influence and at least tried to keep a sense of proportion.

‘But it is plain from the evidence you took a leading role in the expedition with deliberate intention of causing harm.

‘

However, Judge Wilson saved his strongest words for Mark Thompson.

He said: ‘You have gone beyond the intention of causing grievous bodily harm and attempted to kill him.

‘You and your accomplice pursued your attack on the victim after he had gone to the ground when he was defenceless.

‘It’s down to the efforts of medical staff that you didn’t succeed in killing him.

‘

The judge added: ‘This is the second time you have stabbed somone.

.

.

and you have other convictions of violence.

‘You are capable of being of significant threat and harm to people you see as a threat and you must go to prison for life.

‘

After seeing his father burst into tears he screamed: ‘Bollocks, he attacked us first’ and staring at police officers in court, yelled: ‘How do you feel, you prick?’

And as he looked up to his mother one last time before spending the rest of his life in jail, wailing, ‘I love you,’ the grieving woman shouted: ‘He tried to kill my son.

‘

Mr Hutchins had been divorced from wife Bernadette for six years but continued to see her and still lived close to her home.

He only discovered her six-month old relationship with Mark Thompson had started on Valentines Day and phoned their house several times throughout the night.

The next morning the gang of three men barged into Mr Hutchins’ home in Frome Street.

They overpowered their victim but dad David was slashed on the arm with a samurai sword.

Mark then began savagely stabbing his rival.

Prosecutor Alan Kent said the victim tried shouting ‘That’s enough’ but Mark Thompson replied by plunging the knife into his heart with the taunt ‘Now that’s enough.

‘

A neighbour called the ambulance and doctors arrived in a helicopter to try and save Mr Hutchins’ life.

Luckily he was able to identify the Thompsons, of (21) Ramsey Walk, Marquess Estate, Islington, a few weeks later.

They denied attempted murder and claimed self-defence.

A third man, believed to be the boyfriend of David Thompson’s daughter, is still wanted by police for his role in the attack.

Last month the jury convicted Mark of attempted murder and his father David of causing grievous bodily harm with intent by a majority of 11-1.

The jury had acquitted David Thompson of attempted murder after he claimed he took no part in the fight after being slashed.
