A teenager who headbutted a girl and shot her in the stomach when she ignored his chat-up lines faces a jail term today (Thurs).

Jerome Roye, 18, fired a volley of ball bearings at the 16-year-old from close range at a bus stop near her home.

One steel pellet lodged in Lorraine Chin’s navel and another opened up a gash in her leg.

Today he was convicted of possession of a firearm with intent and wounding with intent – for which the maximum sentence is life imprisonment.

Miss Chin, who prefers to be called Kelly, was on her way to the shops at 5pm on September 30 last year when Roye and a friend approached.

Roye said hello to the teenage girl in Rowan Road, Streatham, but became angry when she completely blanked him.

He then threw a trainer at her in a bid to get her attention and shouted: ‘Oy oy’.

Mr Aina said: ‘She complained why are they treating her in that way and the shorter black boy, this defendant, walks up to her and headbutts her in the right side of her face causing a gash which was bleeding.

‘She then lifts up her fists in order to defend herself and clearly there was some contact between them.

‘He reached inside his boxer shorts, produced the handgun and he shot her at close range in the stomach.

‘She didn’t know whether it is a real firearm or not.

‘

Roye then shot her another seven times despite the pleas of his friend to stop.

He challenged her: “You think you are bad now do you?”‘

The boys ran off when Miss Chin’s mother heard the shots and came out of the house.

Roye was picked up by police 20 minutes later but by this time he had swapped clothes with his friend.

The gun, a bag of ball bearings and a receipt dated the same day were found in his pocket.

But even though the girl picked out the wrong boy on the parade nearly two months later there was enough evidence to prove Roye was responsible.

The jury took five hours and 58 minutes to find him guilty of both charges by a majority of ten to two.

Roye, of Windermere Road, Mitcham, Surrey, denied wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm with intend to commit wounding with intent on September 30 last year.

He will be sentenced in three weeks time following the preparation of reports.
