Civil servant claimed he was GCHQ intelligence analyst on bogus CV

A former civil servant accused of lying about being a GCHQ intelligence analyst denied has three fraud charges.

Ifthikhar Alam, 25, allegedly gave false credentials including ‘Head of Western Balkans’ and chief of staff at the National Crime Agency.

Alam denied three counts of fraud by false representation, between 14 October 2021 until 4 February this year when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court.

He held roles at the Cabinet Office and NCA before applying for jobs at the Joint Maritime Security Centre and in the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.

The first charge relates to a job Alam landed at the NCA.

He worked for the law enforcement agency for two years before the investigation began.

Within his application, he also claimed that he was an intelligence analyst at GCHQ, it was said.

Alam also applied for a role at the Joint Maritime Security Centre between 8 January 2024 and 30 April 2024, it was said.

He then allegedly applied for the role of Head of Cancer and Data at the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology between 25 February and 31 December 2024.

Prosecutor Lyndon Harris said: ‘The defendant has now entered not guilty pleas to three counts of fraud by false representation.

‘This arises from his applications to three posts within the civil service.

‘The defendant was initially employed by the Cabinet Office when he applied for a grade three role within the NCA, he was successful in that application and he was employed by the NCA from June 2023 until this year.

‘He also applied for the role of head of cancer and data at the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.

‘The NCA, having been made aware of the issues with his applications, investigated his initial application to the NCA, and it transpired that assertions made in that application were also false.’

Alam, of Beaulieu Close, Camberwell, southeast London, was granted unconditional bail ahead of his seven-day trial on 22 February 2027.
