Kasakh electrician ‘stabbed builder to death for mocking his accent’

An electrician stabbed a Ukrainian builder to death for ‘taking the mickey’ out of his accent, a court heard.

Kazakh Beibit Baimolda, 38, allegedly knifed Oleg Sloboda, 42, in the chest, stomach, neck and face in a rage on 6 May last year.

The two men shared a house in Chingford, East London, along with Baimolda’s wife, Elmira Akimjanova and Robizon Ositashvili, who is Georgian.

Baimolda denies murder claiming he acted in self defence after Mr Sloboda attacked him with a blade.

Louise Oakley, KC, prosecuting, said emergency services were called to the address in Cranston Gardens, Chingford, following reports of a disturbance.

‘When the police arrived at the address the front door was locked.

‘Eventually they managed to gain access and when they did they found Oleg Sloboda lying on his back on the floor in his bedroom. He was unconscious and not breathing.

‘The police immediately commenced emergency life saving treatment which the London Ambulance Service took over upon their arrival.

‘Despite the best efforts of the Police and the London Ambulance Service, Oleg Sloboda’s life could not be saved, and he was declared dead at 22:04 hours.’

Mr Slobeda suffered multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, face, shoulders, chest, stomach, left upper arm and hand.

‘Beibit Baimolda immediately accepted being responsible for the injuries to Oleg Sloboda, albeit he claimed he had only stabbed him two or three times and that his actions were in self defence.’

He claimed while they were drinking a friend of the victim, Ashkat Kaden, started making fun of them.

‘Ashkat saw Oleg talking to Beibit Baimolda and Elmira Akimjanova. They poured him a drink and after a short time Oleg started making jokes,’ said Ms Oakley.

‘He was taking the mickey and mocking how they spoke and their language.

‘Oleg would often do this to Ashkat, but he didn’t find it offensive as he knew Oleg’s personality and knew he was just messing around.

‘It appears, that Beibit Baimolda did not take too kindly to Oleg’s mickey taking. He became angry and found Oleg’s ‘mickey taking’ offensive.

‘Beibit Baimolda’s tone changed, and he began to raise his voice.’

‘Elmira Akimjanova and Ashkat stepped in tried to calm the situation down. Elmira Akimjanova offered everyone another drink.

Baimolda said words to the effect, ‘look what he is doing, its his fault’ referring to Oleg. Oleg then started having a go back saying, ‘do you want to sort this out, let’s go and sort this out’.’

‘Elena Akimjanova told Beibit Baimolda to calm down and warned him that the situation wouldn’t end well. Beibit Baimolda was not concerned. He told his wife that he didn’t give a f–k and said something like if it doesn’t end well, so be it’.

But Baimolda then took a cab to The Kings Ford pub, half a mile away and appeared to make up, Inner London Crown Court heard.

‘CCTV shows the two of them entering the pub together at 17:27:05,’ said Ms Oakley.

‘While inside, they sat down together and shared a drink. At one point it appears they tapped their glasses.’

Later in the evening Beibit and Elmira banged on Robizon Ositashvili’s bedroom door.

‘They were crying and asked him to go downstairs and have a look at Oleg’, said Ms Oakley.

‘Beibit Baimolda told Robizon Ositshvili that he had ‘been drinking beer with Oleg and Oleg started beating him up’.

‘Robizon Ositshvili immediately went downstairs and found Oleg lying on his back on the floor between his bed and a wardrobe.

‘His head was back and there was blood around his mouth and on the floor. He was not moving.

Following his arrest Baimolda said in a prepared statement: ‘I can say that after drinking together Oleg and I returned to his room at our shared house where we ate some food together. It was then that Oleg turned on me without warning. He punched me and then came at me with a knife.

‘He threatened to kill me. I was scared for my life, and I was forced to defend myself. I regret causing Oleg injury, but I had to do it to save my own life.

‘I said to Police at the time that I acted in self defence, and I told them again when I was at the Police Station.’

He added: ‘I turned the knife, I stabbed twice or three times, I don’t know how many then I called the police… we had, sort of, not a bad relationship… yes, our relationship was not bad, he was a neighbour.’

Baimolda denies murder and the trial continues.
