A depressed man died in an horrific accident days after two
failed suicide bids, an inquest heard today (TUES).

Scottish born Stuart Steel, 37, died after plunging more than
120 feet from a 12th floor window.

Neighbour Daniel Doherty, who witnessed the fall, said the
deceased had been cleaning the windows.

Southwark Coroners Court was told two notes were found at the
home of Mr Steel, where he lived with his girlfriend, Bronwyn Murphy.

They refer to two attempts to kill himself by taking an
overdose on two occasions days earlier.

It appeared the deceased had taken more pills on the second
occasion after an unsuccessful first attempt, it was said.

The inquest heard Mr Steel, originally of Rentfrew, Scotland,
had become depressed after arguing with his girlfriend over his drug
habit.

The tragedy happened when Mr Steel fell from the window of
Peter Church House, Peckham, while balancing with one leg over the
ledge on the window on February 26 1993.

Mr Doherty, of Spenfrith House, Ledbury Estate, Peckham said:
‘He was cleaning the window, when he put his leg out.

‘Then he went spreadeagle and fell, he tried to grab something
to save himself but couldn’t.

‘
Mr Doherty said he found the body at the foot of the block
of flats.

The post mortem revealed Mr Steel died of multiple injuries.

He would have been rendered unconscious immediately and would
have felt no pain, remarked the coroner.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Sir Montague Levine
said: ‘He tried to hold on to the window to save himslef, there is no
evidence he wanted to kill himself.
