A mental patient who stabbed a man during a row was locked up today (FRI) after a court heard he is a potential paedophile – yet has no previous sex offence convictions.
Jobless Robert Robson, 25, plunged a knife in Ali Mahmood’s chest after an argument over a missing benefit book.
He was later assessed by a psychiatrist, who discovered Robson harbours fantasies about abusing children.
The Old Bailey heard how shaven-headed Robson was staying at a hostel for the homeless in Greenwich, southeast London, when the incident happened on May 19 last year.
Another resident, Matthew Simms, had accused Mr Mahmood of stealing his DSS book two days before, and he and Robson decided to get their revenge outside the building in Gloucester Circus.
Prosecutor Jeremy Donne said: ‘An altercation arose between the three of them, which involved words, threats, and then the exchange of punches.
‘Bottles were thrown at Mr Mahmood, and the defendant then confronted him.
‘Mr Mahmood said the defendant then pulled a knife from the waistband of his jeans.
The knife was raised above the defendant’s head with the blade facing Mr Mahmood.
‘It was then brought down and plunged into the right side of his chest.
He describes the blade entering his chest to a depth of about two-inches.
‘He grabbed hold of the defendant’s wrist and pulled the knife out of his chest.
Robson made a further attempt to stab him, but the victim grabbed hold of his wrist and twisted it, causing him to drop the knife.
‘
Mr Mahmood stumbled to a nearby police station, and was rushed to hospital, where he was treated for a punctured lung.
He has since made a full recovery.
When police called at the hostel, Robson admitted stabbing Mr Mahmood and handed over the knife.
The court heard that Robson, who has no previous convictions, was assessed at a psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed as suffering from a psychotic disorder.
Dr Michael Ventress said Robson posed a grave danger to others, especially children.
Robson’s barrister Brian O’Neill added: ‘Without treatment, he poses a high risk in the future of sexually abusing children.
‘
The Recorder of London, Michael Hyam, ordered Robson to be detained indefinitely under sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act.
He told Robson: ‘There is a risk of your committing further offences if you are set at large.
‘
Robson, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
No evidence was offered on a charge of attempted murder.
